SIN BIN

NRL grand final party ideas

The grand final is the one day everyone watches, even the people who don't follow footy. Here's how to run a party that works for both lots.

A simple run sheet

  1. Two hours before: people arrive, barbecue on. Put the pre-game on with the sound low.
  2. One hour before: footy tipping sweep. Everyone puts in a gold coin and draws a winning margin.
  3. Forty minutes before: a game of Sin Bin. A 10 question match takes about 20 minutes and gets the whole room talking.
  4. Kick off: screens away, game on.
  5. Half time: a quick grand final quiz or a couple of funny footy questions while people refill.
  6. Full time: pay out the sweep, argue about the Clive Churchill Medal.

Food that works

Keep it to things you can eat standing up with one hand: snags in bread, party pies and sausage rolls, a big tray of wings, and something sweet for the second half. Anything that needs a knife and fork will be ignored the moment there's a try.

Keeping the non-fans involved

This is where most grand final parties fall over. Trivia alone means the same two people win everything. Games where you bluff, draw or write something funny give everyone a fair go. In Sin Bin, someone who has never watched a game can win by writing the most believable fake answer, or by drawing the best jersey in the Expansion Draft.
